Notes · voice · search

Notes that live on your own server.

Write on your phone, in a browser or on the Linux desktop. Record a voice note and get it back as text, transcribed on your own hardware. Search all of it, transcripts included, and keep writing offline on the phone and the desktop.

Three apps, one set of notes

Sign in with an email and a password, and every app reaches the same notes on your server. A note behaves the same in each: it saves a moment after you stop typing, keeps its folder and its pin, and offers the same choice when two edits meet.

Notes are plain text or markdown, organised in folders. Photos, recordings and other files attach to the note they belong to.

Phone

Android app

  • Keeps every note on the phone, so it reads, edits, records and searches offline
  • In the Share menu: text, links, photos and recordings from other apps become a note or join one
  • Camera and gallery photos, voice notes with a level meter

Any browser

Web app

  • An installable PWA for desktop and phone browsers
  • Markdown preview with photos inline, keyboard shortcuts
  • Online, but an unsent edit is kept in the browser and saved when the connection returns

Desktop

Linux desktop app

  • A native app, not a browser in a frame
  • Keeps every note on the computer and works offline, by the same rules as the phone
  • Offers what you copied elsewhere as a new note, and copies photos, recordings and transcripts out

Talk, and get text back

Record a voice note from any of the apps and keep it as audio, or have it transcribed. Transcription is a choice for each recording, and it runs on machines you own: whisper.cpp, on a GPU when one is up and on a CPU when it is not.

The transcript is stored beside the recording, and the server never edits your note by itself. When you want the words in the note, Insert puts them there, as an edit like any other.

  1. Record

In any of the apps. On the phone and the desktop the recording waits on the device until the server has it, so a bad connection cannot lose it.

  2. Queue

If transcription is on for that recording, the server queues a job. The transcription workers ask the server for jobs; they never open its database.

  3. GPU first

A whisper.cpp worker on a GPU machine takes the job at once and runs a large model (large-v3-turbo).

  4. CPU fallback

If no GPU worker has taken it within a minute (the machine may be switched off), a CPU worker runs it with a smaller model and records which model it used.

  5. Beside the audio

The transcript appears under the recording and is searchable at once. Insert puts it into the note as an ordinary, versioned edit.

On the maker’s GPU machine an 11-second clip is transcribed in under a second.

Everything it does today

Each of these is built and running on the maker’s server. What is not built is named further down this page.

Write and find

Notes in plain text or markdown, kept where you put them and found again by anything they say.

Notes in folders

Plain text or markdown, organised in nested folders, with the ones you need pinned to the top. Deleted notes go to a trash you can restore from.

Search everything

Full-text search over titles, bodies and transcripts, with the matching words highlighted. A match inside a recording says so.

Photos in notes

Take one, pick from the gallery, paste or drop it. The server keeps the original and makes an upright preview for every app to show.

Speak instead of typing

Record from any of the apps. Transcription is optional for each recording, and it runs on your own machines.

Voice notes

Record in a note, or start a new voice note in one tap. Recordings play back in each app, with the transcript underneath.

Transcribed on your hardware

whisper.cpp turns speech into text on a GPU worker, with a CPU worker as the fallback. The audio is not sent to a transcription service.

Your note stays yours

A transcript is stored beside its recording. It goes into the note only when you choose Insert, as an ordinary edit.

Keep working, and share

Offline when the network goes, honest when two edits meet, and shared only with the people you ask.

Works offline

The phone and the desktop app keep every note. Edits, new notes, recordings and photos wait on the device and are sent when the server is back, never twice.

Conflicts are shown

If a note changed somewhere else while you were editing, you choose: keep mine or take theirs. Nothing is silently overwritten.

Shared folders

Invite someone to a folder by email as a viewer or an editor. They accept first, and the folder stays yours to move, trash or stop sharing.

Send to other apps

Send a note to thingfile, where it becomes an item with its photos and files, or to muster, where its text becomes a proposal for a new project.

The Android share sheet

Share text, links, photos or recordings from another app into notepad64, and share a note, a photo or a transcript back out.

The desktop clipboard

Copy something in another program and the desktop app offers it as a new note or an addition to this one. Paste pictures in, copy photos and recordings out.

Offline, and honest about conflicts

The phone and the desktop app keep a copy of every note, so they open, edit, create, record and search with no connection at all. What you do offline waits on the device and is sent, in order, the next time the server answers. Each new note and upload carries its own id, so one whose reply was lost is never applied twice.

Every save names the version of the note it was made on. If the note has changed since, on another device or by someone you share the folder with, the save is refused and the app asks you: keep mine, or take theirs. A newer version is never silently overwritten.

What it isn’t, yet

notepad64 is early, and this page would rather say so than let you find out.

  • There is no public sign-up and nothing to download yet. notepad64 runs on its maker’s own server.
  • There is no iPhone app. The phone app is Android only; an iPhone can use the web app.
  • The web app needs a connection. Only the Android and Linux apps work offline.
  • Notes are not end-to-end encrypted. They travel over HTTPS, and the server stores them readable, because that is what lets it search them.

The newest pieces (shared folders, sending to muster, the Android share sheet and offline on the desktop) are built and covered by automated tests, but have not yet had much use by hand.

Your notes, on hardware you own.

notepad64 is not open to the public yet. When there is something to sign up for or download, this is where it will be.
